Dyeing Eggs for Easter: A Step-By-Step Guide

Not sure what this video is all about but I guess it works.

Easter is almost here and that means it’s time to break out the dyes and create some beautiful eggs! Whether you’re looking to add a festive touch to your home decor or you want to surprise your family with brightly colored eggs during your Easter egg hunt, dyeing eggs can be a fun and creative activity. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to dye eggs for Easter.

First, start by hard boiling the eggs and allowing them to cool completely. To make sure the eggs don’t crack while boiling, place them in a single layer in a pot large enough so that they have plenty of room. Cover them with at least an inch of cold water (this will prevent overheating) then bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat before reducing the heat and simmering the eggs for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, cover the pot, and allow the eggs to sit for 12 minutes before transferring them into an ice water bath until cooled completely.

Once your boiled eggs are cool, it’s time to get started on coloring! There are several ways you can go about this – using traditional store bought egg dyes or making homemade dyes from ingredients like onion skins, spinach leaves, turmeric powder, red cabbage leaves and black tea bags.

If you opt for traditional store bought dyes: Place 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in each cup then add 1 teaspoon hot water in each cup followed by 10 drops of food coloring (you may need more depending on desired intensity). Swirl it around with a spoon until mixed then carefully submerge each egg into one of the cups until fully dyed. If desired use additional spoons or picks to add spots/lines designs onto each egg after submerging it into the cup but before removing it – these patterns may appear lighter than areas that were not manipulated so keep this in mind while designing your creations! Once finished add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil per cup followed by 1 tablespoon salt – swish around gently with spoon until dissolved – remove egg(s) after 5 minutes (or longer if darker color desired). Rinse off excess dye under running cold tap water before drying off with paper towel or tissue paper.

If you opt for homemade dyes: Boil fruits/veggies/tea bags per instructions above in 4 separate pots (for each color)* . Mix juices from boiled fruits/veggies inside mugs along with 3 tablespoons white vinegar** per mug – stir together well then slowly lower in egg(s) until submerged completely into liquid solution*** – leave undisturbed 15 minutes **** then rinse off excess dye under running cold tap water before drying off with paper towel or tissue paper*****

*Note: For best results use blueberries for blue dye, yellow onion skins for yellow dye, spinach leaves for green dye, red cabbage leaves for purple dye , & black tea bags for brown dye .

**Note: Depending on type of fruit used , adjust amount of vinegar accordingly . Eg . Lemons = 2 tablespoons white vinegar : oranges = 4 tablespoons white vinegar .

***Note : For light colors increase immersion time up to 20 minutes .

**** Note : For darker colors decrease immersion time down to 10 minutes.

***** Note : Keep gloves handy as natural dyes tend to stain hands !
And there you have it – everything you need know about how to dye eggs this Easter season!
