Wenge
Wenge is a striking, medium-brown wood with unique reddish or yellowish undertones, complemented by distinctive nearly black streaks. When finished—especially with an oil finish—Wenge heartwood can develop a deep, nearly black appearance, giving it a rich, sophisticated look. Interestingly, unlike many dark hardwoods, the heartwood of Wenge can lighten when exposed to sunlight over time, revealing a dynamic character that evolves with age. The grain of Wenge is typically straight, with a coarse texture, offering a bold aesthetic, though it has a low natural luster.
This wood is highly valued in woodworking for its strength and striking visual appeal, but it is important to note that Wenge is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List due to a population decline of over 50% in the past three generations, driven by habitat loss and overexploitation. As a result, it’s crucial to source Wenge responsibly to help protect this valuable species.
Brownheart
Brownheart wood is a rich medium to dark brown, often with subtle reddish undertones, creating a warm and inviting appearance. Its distinctive contrast comes from lighter brown lines, which are the result of parenchyma, giving the wood a unique, varied look. The pale sapwood is clearly defined against the darker heartwood, enhancing the wood’s natural beauty. The grain is typically straight to slightly irregular, offering a uniform medium texture and a moderate natural luster that deepens with age.
Brownheart is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but it is critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List, with a population reduction of over 80% in the past three generations due to habitat loss and overexploitation. As a result, Brownheart is rarely exported and is primarily used within its native range for heavy-duty exterior construction and interior furniture projects. Small turning blanks are occasionally available, though they tend to be priced moderately to highly due to the wood’s limited availability as an imported hardwood.
When working with Brownheart, it’s important to ensure responsible sourcing to help preserve this valuable and increasingly rare species.
