While I enjoy visiting family in different locations around the globe, I tend to find it a little stressful when it comes time to figure out food. Most of my extended family members know I love to cook and then all of a sudden want me to whip something out from what they have in stock in their refrigerator.
This might be a little stressful for your guest but at the same time, I’m pretty sure they are honored that you asked. So do not be alarmed if they follow up your request with questions to direct them to the nearest grocery and butcher.
I’ve circumvented this by researching places to shop while I do my online airplane ticket search. That way by the time I land, I’m already set to head to the farmers markets, butchers, and groceries. Oh, on grocery stores, I even sign up for the local membership rewards. They don’t seem to mind and I don’t mind being on their email list. My inner nerd wants to mention that I don’t mind the email list because it helps me compare prices of cabbage around the world.
I was heading to a rural part of Virginia, near Richmond, so I started looking up butchers. I came across Belmont Butchery. The reviews on the web were good. Their website was good. I even made phone calls to see what they have in stock and I was pretty excited. I finally visited the shop and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was more impressed about the different items they didn’t tell me about…duck fat and the various soup stocks. The other part is that I appreciated how helpful the staff was in helping me select meats. They were knowledgeable about different cuts and showed pride behind their products.
Swing by if you ever find yourself in Richmond, Virginia. I’d also visit Q Barbeque while you’re in the area.
